Joy Division

Joy Division was a post punk band from England in the 1970s, They formed in 1976 when Ian Curtis met Brian Sumner and Peter Hook at a Sex Pistols performance. After finally deciding on Stephen Morris as their drummer over the many they had tried out prior, They ended up changing their name to Joy Division rather than Warsaw as they had originally intended. This was due to a dispute with another band from the area at the same time who went by the name Warsaw Pakt.

Curtis soon became well known for his alienated, somber and at times akward stage presence, As well as his signature dances that he used to do on stage which have been compared to the seizures that he sometimes experienced due to his eplipsy.

His lyrics, Which he sang mostly in a baritone lament were about death, remoteness, loneliness and seclusion as well as feelin estranged, withdrawn and indifference. He primarily sang in Joy Division, however he as played guitars, and key synthizers on many of their songs.

The Legend that was Ian Curtis comitted suicide on this day 30 years ago, There would be many biographies created about his life and death including his estranged wife Debbie Curtis's book Touching From A Distance, as well as the 2007 biopic Control by Anton Corbijn.
